Tax year and top filing flags

Use the top boxes only when the Form 1040 PDF asks for a tax year or a special filing flag such as deceased taxpayer, spouse, or qualifying combat zone information.

Do not invent a top-of-form entry. Use these fields only when your filing situation or IRS instructions call for them.

Lines 1a-1z - wages and earned income

Report wages, household employee wages, tips, Medicaid waiver payments, dependent care benefits, employer adoption benefits, Form 8919 wages, other earned income, combat pay election, and the line 1z total as the form requests.

Use wage and income documents such as W-2s and related forms. The walkthrough notes that some income may be reported on one line and adjusted elsewhere instead of ignored.

Gross and taxable amounts can differ. Use the IRS worksheets, related forms, or tax software instead of guessing taxable amounts.

Lines 7-11a - capital gain, Schedule 1, total income, adjustments, and AGI

Enter capital gain or loss, Schedule 1 additional income, total income, Schedule 1 adjustments, and adjusted gross income as the form and schedules calculate them.

Schedule 1 has both additional income and adjustments to income. Do not combine them into the wrong 1040 line.

Common question: can I type only the final total and ignore schedules? If a line says Schedule 1, Schedule D, or another form applies, prepare and attach the required schedule rather than only typing a final number.

IRS Form 1040 is the main annual individual income tax return. Some common income, deduction, credit, and tax items flow in from schedules, so the 1040 page should be treated as the summary form rather than the only document.

Schedules

Schedules such as 1, 2, 3, A, B, C, D, and SE may be needed depending on your tax situation.
